To Better Understand Our Township Board
On January the 6th we met with the LeGrande Township Board to establish a
communication link with our lake board. The following questions were presented and
graciously answered by LeGrande board members.
1. What is the annual budget of the township? Presently between 700 and 800
thousand dollars. Complete details available at the annual Township meeting
on March 11th at 8:00 pm right after the election polls close.
2. Do you expect to see an increase or decrease in the budget next year? We expect to
see an increase due mostly to growth within the Township.
3. What sources of funds does the township have (state or federal) in addition to the
local taxes?
4. What percentage of the township property tax base is: 1. Commercial / industrial,
2. Lakeshore residential, 3. Non-lakeshore residential, 4. Agricultural.
5. How are township taxes calculated for an individual property within the township?
Taxes are based on market value. Different percentages applied depending on
the type of property. 11% of the county property tax flows back to the
LeGrande Township.
6. With limited resources, what are the highest priorities of services required of
LeGrande Township? That would be transportation, roads and the year round
maintenance of those roads within the township.
7. Does the township have any ownership or responsibility for the Lake Latoka
swimming beach? If not, who does? LeGrande Township is the owner of and
responsible for the swimming beach at the north end of the lake. The township
chips in $10,000.00 a year to provide lifeguard coverage during the summer
months. The township also takes care of the grounds keeping.
8. As developments are proposed within the township, what kinds of concerns does
the township have about such developments? The township attends all countyzoning
meetings to protect the interests of LeGrande Township.
9. With annexation discussions by other townships and the city of Alexandria, do you
see any annexation of LeGrande Township in the near future? There is no formal
plan for annexation of the township by the city of Alexandria. The township
does not stand in the way of annexation if the majority of the property owners
in the affected area are in favor of the annexation. What has been happening
is we loose pieces and parts of the township little by little over time.
10. If Douglas County is 20% covered by water, what percentage of LeGrande
Township is covered by water?
11. How many lakes are there in LeGrande Township and what are their names? There
are a total of 19 lakes in the township. Listed alphabetically:
